Every game community develops a shorthand, and Halloween: The Game inherited a double dose — half from forty-plus years of Halloween fandom, half from asymmetric horror games before it. This page decodes all of it in one place. Bookmark it; every guide on this wiki links back here.
The Shape
The Shape is Michael Myers as he appears in the credits of the 1978 film — deliberately listed not as a man but as a presence. In game discussions, “The Shape,” “Michael,” and “Michael Myers” are interchangeable. See the full Michael Myers guide for everything confirmed about him in-game.
Boogeyman
The Boogeyman is the living-match name for whoever is playing Michael in a given round. The official marketing leans on it — “Become the Boogeyman or fight back against the face of evil.” If someone says “I main Boogeyman,” they mean they prefer playing the killer side of the 1v4 mode.
Civilians
Civilians are the four survivor characters in the online mode — Haddonfield residents up against the Boogeyman. IllFonic confirmed that duplicate Civilians are allowed in private matches, so a four-stack can pick the same character if they want to.
1v4
The match structure: one Boogeyman against four Civilians. It is the standard asymmetric horror formula and the core of the game’s online mode. More in the game modes guide.
Story Mode
The single-player campaign, played as Michael Myers, retracing his escape from Smith’s Grove sanitarium and his return to Haddonfield on Halloween night, 1978. Short and cinematic per launch previews — and the fastest way to learn Michael’s move kit.
Advance Access
Advance Access was the pre-launch window in which players who pre-purchased the game could already play, ahead of the full September 8, 2026 unlock. It explains why guides and clips appeared before launch day. It was a pre-order benefit, not a separate edition — the game costs a flat $39.99 digitally.
Private Match
A private match is a lobby you configure yourself rather than queueing into public matchmaking. Confirmed as a launch feature; supports duplicate Civilians and an in-game friends list. The natural home for learning the game with friends before going live.
Offline Bot Play
Offline bot play lets you face AI outside live matchmaking. The launch-window caveat worth repeating: offline, you can only play as Michael — there is no AI-controlled Myers for survivor practice.
Crossplay
Crossplay means players on different platforms share the same lobbies. Confirmed for Halloween: The Game across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with an in-game friends list and friend codes. Full details in the platforms and crossplay guide.
Cross-Progression
Cross-progression would let your unlocks travel between platforms. Halloween: The Game does not have it — IllFonic confirmed it is unsupported with no current plans. Your progress lives on the platform you bought it for.
Haddonfield
The fictional Illinois suburb where everything happens — Michael’s hometown and the game’s single setting, faithfully dated to Halloween night, 1978. Streets, houses, and the night’s geography are the game’s map.
Smith’s Grove
Smith’s Grove sanitarium is the institution Michael escapes from at the start of the story — the opening movement of both the 1978 film and the game’s campaign.
Asymmetric Horror
The genre label: asymmetric horror is PvP where the two sides are deliberately unequal — one powerful hunter against several weaker survivors (1v4 here). IllFonic’s specialty, from Friday the 13th: The Game to Predator: Hunting Grounds to this.
