The Smith’s Grove prologue is Halloween: The Game’s opening statement — Michael’s escape from the sanitarium, six challenges, and the first taste of the game’s stealth-horror pacing. Five of the six challenges are straightforward; one of them is, by community consensus, the hardest challenge in the entire game. This page routes you through all six in one clean run.

The Rule That Governs Everything
Challenges only save when you complete the chapter. Quit mid-level, restart after a mistake, or die out, and the checklist wipes for that run. The optimal strategy: know all six before you start (this page), then knock them out in a single uninterrupted completion. Chapter completion also awards the Flaming Keepsake cosmetic and feeds the campaign total — every challenge in the game together unlocks Michael’s legendary 1978 original look.
Challenge 1 — Terrify an Orderly and Cause Him to Flee
Usually free. If it has not triggered naturally: grab an orderly, deliberately fail the struggle quick-time encounter, and drop him. He panics, runs for the exit, and the challenge checks off the moment he escapes. Allow a minute for him to actually get there.
Challenge 2 — Grab and Execute Three Orderlies With Bare Hands
Grab with the left trigger, then press the execution button — bare hands, no weapon. Any three orderlies, any method, and the counter does the rest. Most players finish this accidentally during challenges 4 and 6.
Challenge 3 — Execute an Orderly With the Telephone Pole
The pole stands near the end of the map, to the right of the power box the mission tells you to shut off. Grab an orderly, walk him to the pole, and take the environmental-execution prompt when it appears.
Challenge 4 — Throw an Orderly to His Death
Directly after the pole: continue along the path and you will find an orderly shining his flashlight on a Smith’s Grove patient. Approach from behind, grab, walk him a short distance down the road to the throw icon, and let the game take over.
Challenge 5 — Escape Undetected (The Hardest Challenge in the Game)
This is the one. The undetected escape runs a scripted guard gauntlet where walking speed is law and patience is the only weapon. The route that works:
Skip the noise and stroll out
Ignore the opening distractions. Walk — do not run — out of the starting area and let the first orderly pass you on the stairs.
Creep the edge, then the ambulance
Creep around the edge until you see the flashlight beams, turn, and walk back up the steps. Once at the top you may run to the ambulance and tuck behind it while two guards move through their scripted beats.
Read the second guard's pattern
When the second guard climbs the steps, watch him: he walks the ridge, talks to another guard, then descends. If he gets stuck on geometry, restart — that attempt cannot be saved. When he turns his back and heads left toward the dead-end fence, descend the stairs carefully.
Walk the street on his blind side
Follow him down at walking pace. Only when he drifts to the left side of the road do you move past — then run for the treeline.
Survey the fork, then commit
At the open ground, pause and check both flanks for lights. When the coast is clear, run to the fuse-box prompt — shoulder-check it if the interact refuses, then mash the button like your life depends on it, sprint to Loomis’ location, and bolt for the back of the station wagon.
Challenge 6 — Take Out or Drive Off All 12 Orderlies
Counterintuitively gentler than challenge 5, and it reuses the same opening: stairs, ambulance, first orderly down. From there, sweep the route and eliminate orderlies as encountered — including the groups that burst out mid-patrol. Two mercy rules the completion runs confirmed: orderlies who escape on their own still count toward the twelve, and stuck NPCs no longer matter because you are killing them anyway. Michael does not climb or duck under gates — if an orderly hides behind one, loop around; there are exactly twelve, and the counter tells you when you are done. Every takedown here rehearses the knockdown that powers the multiplayer arrest strategy — the same principle, practiced solo.
The Full Campaign Context
The prologue is chapter one of six. Where the rest of the campaign goes — Rachel’s friends in chapter 3, the tier-three lover’s stalk in chapter 4, Laurie’s climax in chapter 5 — is mapped in our story challenges hub, alongside the Loomis Tape collectible hunt and the rewards ladder that ends at the 1978 Michael skin. For what these skills are worth in live matches, read the game modes breakdown and the survivor guide.
